The “Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino” (LMP), by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 933 (s. 2014), is declared to be celebrated every last week of July in order to promote original Pilipino music (OPM) and increase the Filipino audiences' appreciation of homegrown music.
For this year, the Sentro Rizal is pleased to be joined by NCCA Youth and Sentro Rizal Ambassador SB19 Josh Cullen and rapper-songwriter Al James in celebrating LMP 2024.
A pivotal figure in P-Pop and Filipino Hip-hop, Josh Cullen, who first gained recognition as the lead rapper and vocalist of SB19 before embarking on a successful solo career in 2023, embodies the spirit of innovation and collaboration in his works with a clear vision of bringing Filipino music onto a broader global stage. He recently represented the Philippines in the 2024 ASEAN-Korea Music Festival, and was featured in the GRAMMYS Global Spin.
Owing his interest in hip-hop music to his earlier involvement in the street art scene, Al James, on the other hand, produces songs that can easily be related to by diverse sections of the country from the “scene kids” of Makati, to the real “street guys” of Tondo. His own rendition of his original song “Pahinga”, dubbed as “Palamig ka Muna” in McDonald's Philippines' successful summer campaign is proof of how effective the music is in penetrating our senses. Aside from being hailed as the rapper with the golden voice in the OPM music scene today, Al James also executes his creativity being a graphic artist of his own cover arts.
As cultural literacy advocate and art enthusiast themselves, this special MV of their original composition 'Yoko Na' shot in the National Museum of Natural History not only highlights the local artists' creative and collaborative initiatives in between genres, but further sheds awareness on the accessibility of our public and national museums.
