BK Live is a daily live news and information talk show dedicated to the people, places, and events in the Borough of Brooklyn.
On this segment:
Break out the shamrock shakes! St. Patrick’s Day may be around the corner, but Brooklynites don't have to wait until March 17 for the wearing o' the green. Celebrate early this Sunday, March 15 with the Brooklyn St. Patrick’s Parade in Park Slope. Kathleen McDonagh co-founded the parade 40 years ago and discusses why Irish culture is so important to the borough.
John Henderson is a bagpiper and co-founder of Kings County Pipes & Drums. He will play and march for the fourth consecutive year this Sunday in the parade which steps off at 1pm from Bartel-Pritchard Square located at 15th Street and Prospect Park West. John's band traces its beginnings to 2012 when he assembled a group of friends to play in the Brooklyn St. Patrick's Day Parade with him. Perhaps if Greg is good, he can get a free bagpiping lesson!
After the parade, continue the festivities by heading to North Slope’s newest Irish pub, McMahon’s Public House. Born in Ireland, Michael McMahon came to Brooklyn 30 years ago. He purchased O’Connor’s, a favorite neighborhood dive bar which hadn’t had any major upgrades since it opened back in 1931. McMahon’s turns one year old this St. Patrick’s Day and boasts 20 beers on tap and a traditional Irish menu which our hosts Greg and Tati can sample. Did you know corned beef isn't actually Irish?
