After relegation to the Third Division in 1984, the club appointed Arthur Cox as manager. Although they missed out on promotion in Cox's first season as manager, Derby County then won back-to-back promotions and were back in the First Division for the 1987–88 season, with attendance, also rising as the club's on-the-field fortunes and financial position improved.
