Weather forecasting models in the United States are about to get a big upgrade thanks to two new supercomputers. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently completed installation of the new hardware in Phoenix, Arizona, and Manassas, Virginia. Combined, the two supercomputers will increase NOAA's weather and climate forecasting capabilities by 20%. Brian Gross is the director of NOAA's Environmental Modeling Center. Gross said that this increase in computing power immediately expands the capability of US forecast models. “The speed and the skill of these numerical weather prediction models is directly tied to the amount of computing power that we can throw at these problems,” Gross said. Gross and his team will use that additional computing power to improve forecast models in four different ways. At the forefront: increasing model resolution.
