15 Indian national artists and 15 Aurovilians artists will be selected to collaborate and work on the theme “A new world is possible”, inspired by a quotation from the Mother in the Agenda.
This project wishes to have an educational part as well, 5 Aurovilian students and 5 Indian national students (above 18) will participate to this art camp.
This Art Camp will take place from March 16th till March 23rd. During this week, artists will be asked to produce one piece of Art and to participate to some Public Art events. Interactions with the community will happen during evenings.
We have been blessed so far to be helped and supported by different groups and services of Auroville and hope that this festival will help bringing the community together in the spirit of Mother vision.
Sri Aurobindo and the Mother assign the highest status to Art which serves as the revealer and teacher of a quest for the All-Beautiful.
In this spirit, we decided in 2019 at the occasion of Auroville’s 50th birthday to organise an Artist camp with residency in Auroville. 35 artists were selected and invited to work on the theme ” A new world is possible. “
The art camp focuses on the collaboration of Indian national artists with Aurovilian artists, working on a specific theme during one week. One of our intentions is to create a bridge between Aurovilian artists and Indian national artists. Art students are also invited to participate as this is a great platform for exchange and learning.
Art is a profound centre of this journey towards the future. The intent of the first Auroville art camp was to try to evoke a New World. By organising an art camp with artists from all over India, we tried to create a concentrated atmosphere in which we could work on this new world to come through Art. and the search of Beauty which is an ideal to be.
It was a wonderful week. The support and feedback of the art community and Auroville motivated us to renew the experience. We have been recently added to the initiative ”mapping residencies in India” by Space 118, a platform created by an art patron and collector located in Mumbai ([ Ссылка ])
The theme of the second edition, inspired by several passages of Savitri the epic poem of Sri Aurobindo, is the “City of Dawn”.
We published a call for artists in September 2019 which lasted two months. We received hundreds of applications from all over India and from Auroville, of course. The diversity, richness and quality of the bodies of works we received was stunning. We are grateful to have been able to select wonderful artists, some of them well-known established artists.
The second edition could not happen in March 2020 as planned, so it was postponed to 2021. We decided not to make a new selection but invite the artists already selected for 2020 as they were not able to come.
WHAT do we hope to achieve through the Art Camp?
Artist residency:
To provide artists a time and a space of creation in an atmosphere that encourages concentration and quality.
To allow artists to explore their artistic research within Auroville; experiencing this unique experiment that is Auroville.
To offer artists a moment away from their usual environment.
To give to the Auroville community a moment of creative and resourceful interaction.
To enable the exchange of ideas and practices for emerging, established artists, and art students alike.
To nurture younger artists.
To create a network of artists within India.
To offer an “in-kind” support for artists (art materials, food and accommodation are provided)
To encourage and build a sustainable infrastructure for artists.
To create a non-profit model to build and sustain Auroville artistic practices.
Public space (artists are performing a collective art installation in public space in Auroville during their stay):
The model of using an Auroville public space as the platform to bring art to people is an effective way of creating an interaction with the community and bringing in audiences and different demographics that would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience and engage with art.
