Taking advantage of another rider's mechanical problem is simply considered bad sportsmanship. To the greatest extent possible, race should not be determined by random strokes of bad luck. It should be won and lost based on the strength of the riders, their bicycle handling skills, and their understanding of race tactics.
In this type of situation, what are the unwritten rules? Is it bad sportsmanship to attack in this situation, even if it is a race? Would a victory in this situation, if not stopped, be tainted or recorded differently?
Alberto Contador took the yellow jersey from Andy Schleck at the Tour de France, then braced himself for the aftermath. There was no usual chorus of applause for a job well done by the audience. Instead, there was a deluge of boos and whistles.
Contador had expected it deep down. He had a feeling that no matter how wonderful it was to be wearing the yellow jersey at this stage of the Tour, he would end up being the villain.
The fans were reacting to what happened on Monday's final climb of Stage 15 when Schleck's bike chain came off while he was launching an attack on Contador and other riders. Contador, the defending Tour champion, did not stop to wait for Schleck, infuriating fans who believed he had broken racing protocol.
