S AFRICA: TAXI WARS
DURATION: 5 MINUTES 52 SECONDS
ENGLISH SPEECH: 1 MINUTE 24 SECONDS
STORY:South Africans continue to face the bitter truths of violence, racism
and poverty. Right-wing extremists, rival tribal warfare and battles
between taxi drivers vying for the same business result in
bloodshed. In Cape Town, fighting over "taxi turf" has left at least
fifty people dead and scores more injured. Officials are trying to
end the conflict, but allegations implicating white policemen leave
the city's commuters frightened and distrustful.
