Come with me while I explain Ofcom’s proposal to cap the cost of second-class stamps.
We place a cap on the cost of second-class stamps to ensure there remains an affordable option for sending letters and cards for all.
We’re proposing to keep a cap in place, so Royal Mail cannot increase the price of second-class stamps above that of inflation, until at least 2029.
This is to help make sure the universal postal service remains affordable, while allowing Royal Mail to recover its costs.
This comes after we found:
- Seven in ten people prefer to send emails than a physical letter when possible
- Two-thirds of people still send a letter each month
- Sending and receiving physical birthday and Christmas cards remain important to people in the digital age.
We are consulting on this proposal until 1 September 2023.
