Breithorn, Zermatt Switzerland (4164m | 13,661ft)
Fun times climbing the Breithorn. The West summit is really quite easy to get up to, just a gradual snow walk from the lift. Continuing further along the ridge, Breithorn Central summit is still easy but a little bit more precarious as the ridge narrows. Further still, the traverse on top of the rock was quite challenging. Climbing with crampons was awkward and slow. We eventually got held up by a ledge that made us uncomfortable enough to turn around. It wasn't too technical but without any gear to secure a belay point we thought it best to turn around. It worked out well because we made the last lift down with less than 10 minutes to spare.
This ultimately was an acclimatization day for the Matterhorn and it served its purpose well to prepare our lungs and legs. I would highly recommend this climb to anyone interested and definitely would not get a guide as its just an easy walk up to the top. Hiking poles and crampons are pretty much a necessity though.
