HISTORIC TOMB REOPENS TO PUBLIC
Egypt Natural Sound Duration: 2.05
Egypt has opened the ancient tomb of Queen Nefertari to visitors
for the first time since it was discovered nearly 100 years ago.
Visitors will be limited to 150 a day to reduce the risk of
spoiling the splendid colours in wall paintings that show the
favourite wife of Ramses II, who was pharaoh from 1304 B.C. to
1223 B.C. They each show Nefertari, a legendary beauty, wearing a
different dress and earrings. One antiquities official said the
tomb -- in the Valley of the Queens in Luxor, a town about 300
miles (500 km) south of Cairo -- had undergone six years of
repair, with costs of $6 million. It is expected that foreign
visitors will be charged an entry fee of $30. Officials hope the
opening of the tomb, which was discovered in 1904, will help
attract hundreds of thousands of tourists a year to Luxor, one of
Egypt's most monument-rich areas. Nefertari was the first wife of
Ramses II, considered one of Egypt's greatest pharaohs, who
claimed to have sired more than 100 children by many wives. He
also built such monuments as the Great Temple of Abu Simbel in
Luxor.
