Everybody has opinions about bits. Vern was extremely heavy on the forehand so I was using a modified Segunda with a small port. I hated worrying about hitting him in the mouth. Somehow we tried the Perfect Bit, which was originally a Western bit and bam -- the problem was solved. The secret is in the ball joint. The bit doesn't hit the horse in the roof of the mouth and you are communicating with the side you are pulling on! It makes so much sense! There are lots of different styles so Now i just use it whether there's a problem or not.
