Hydrogen is an essential element used in various industries, particularly in metals and chemical refining processes such as ammonia and steel production. Currently, around 120 million tons of hydrogen, sourced from fossil fuels, are used for these processes. Hydrogen can even directly replace coal used in steel production, especially through a process known as direct reduced iron (DRI). By replacing traditional blast furnaces with hydrogen-based DRI furnaces, it's possible to significantly decrease the use of fossil fuels and the associated CO2 emissions in these sectors.
But here's where Musk's vision takes a surprising turn. Despite the potential of hydrogen in these industries, he believes that it won't play a significant role in transportation. Instead, he suggests that if a chemical fuel is to be used, it should be CH4 (methane), not hydrogen.
Yet, there's no denying the value of hydrogen for industrial processes. It can be produced sustainably by splitting water - a process that contributes to the broader vision of a decarbonized and sustainable future.
