May 22nd, 1982. Nicaraguan legend “El Flaco Explosivo” Alexis Arguello defended his WBC World Lightweight Championship against No. 1 contender Andy Ganigan aka “Hawaiian Punch” who competed in his 3rd consecutive bout outside of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Prefight records; Arguello 70(57)-5, Ganigan 34(30)-3.

In December 1974, Alexis won the WBA World Featherweight Title via KO13 over Ruben Olivares and made 4 successful defenses between March 1975 and Jun 1976 before moving up to 130 pounds in January 1978 to challenge and beat “El Salsero” Alfredo Escalera via TKO13 to bag the WBC World Super Featherweight Title.

He made 8 successful defenses of his WBC strap.

Arguello then became a Triple Crown World Champion by outpointing Jim Watt over 15 rounds in June 1981 and defended the title 3 times between October 1981 and February 1982.

The hard hitting Ganigan was set to be his 4th defense.

Entering the bout, the Hawaiian southpaw had top wins over Rodolfo Gonzalez, Sean O'Grady & Vicente Mijares (2x) while the defending champion in the 14th year of his pro career had notable triumphs over the José Legrá, Raul Martinez Mora, Leonel Hernandez, Rigoberto Riasco, Art Hafey, Ruben Olivares, Royal Kobayashi, Rey Tam, Godfrey Stevens, Rafael Limon, Bobby Chacon, Ruben Castillo, Rolando Navarette, Cornelius Boza-Edwards, Jose Luis Ramirez, Jim Watt, Roberto Elizondo, Ray Mancini & Alfredo Escalera (2x).

After about 90 seconds of feeling each other out, both started exchanging but Ganigan got the upper hand as he connected with good right hands to the body and decked Arguello with straight left hands 45 seconds before the bell sounded to end round 1.

The last time Alexis hit the canvas was in November 1980, it was also against a hard punching southpaw in Jose Luis Ramirez but he came back to win via a slim SD10.

Having gained confidence from earning a 2 point round, the challenger showed increased confidence in round 2 but was gradually getting reckless while the technically savvy Arguello began to place his shots accurately to return the favor with his patented right cross in round 3.

Ganigan showed tremendous resolve after getting back on his feet as he hammered the defending champion with right hands but he took a fair share of right hands himself towards the end of the round.

In round 4, both fighters had their moments but Alexis was in better control of the action as he timed and countered Andy who often bore in aggressively especially after taking punishment as he felt the immediate urge to retaliate.

At the end of the round, Ganigan began bleeding from the nose due to the Nicaraguan’s sharp thudding jabs.

Early in round 5, Arguello connected with more pulverizing shots as blood began to flow out of the challenger’s nose again and from that point it became apparent he was in total command of the bout.

With about 20 seconds left in the round, the champion connected with jabs and right hands to wobble Ganigan to the ropes followed by a fusillade of bombs upstairs and downstairs that ended with a devastating right cross to score his second knockdown just as the bell rung.

Referee Carlos Padilla proceeded to count Ganigan out.

This was Arguello’s last fight at Lightweight as he move up to 140 pounds in July 1982 and beat future Mike Tyson trainer Kevin Rooney via KO2 in his debut.

In November of the same year, he attempted to make history by taking on WBA World Light Welterweight Champion Aaron Pryor in "The Battle of the Champions". A victory over Pryor would make him the first ever Quadruple World Champion of the sport.

After 40 minutes, the Nicaraguan legend was defeated via TKO13 after a grueling back and forth battle of nonstop action by both fighters.

However, the outcome of the bout remained controversial due to the fact Panama Lewis had illegally made his fighter consumed a mysterious black liquid contained in a bottle in at least 2 occasions.

Pryor appeared to be invigorated after ingesting the contents from the bottle each time, which ultimately gave him a renewed burst of energy that allowed him to score late knockout while behind in 2 of the 3 scorecards in the penultimate round.

What made it more controversial was that a post fight drug test was not conducted by the officials on duty.

Aaron Pryor vs. Alexis Arguello I is named as Fight of the Decade of the 1980s and the 8th Greatest World Title Fight of All Time by The Ring.

On July 1st 2009, Alexis Arguello tragically died from a self inflicted gunshot wound to the chest at only 57 years of age.
