SRLIP To Harness Godavari River Waters For Krishna Basin
In a remarkable effort to address water scarcity and enhance irrigation prospects in Telangana, the Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project (SRLIP) is set to make a transformative impact by harnessing the abundant waters of the Godavari River. This visionary project aims to lift water from the Godavari and redirect it to the Krishna Basin- almost near the Nagarjuna Sagar left canal, benefiting vast agricultural areas in the region.
SRLIP is the result of a merger of the Rajiv Dummugudem Lift Irrigation Scheme (RDLIS) and the Indira Sagar Rudramkota Lift Irrigation Schemes (ISRLIS), initiated by the erstwhile government of Andhra Pradesh. Recognizing the need for a more integrated approach, the Government of Telangana decided to combine these schemes into a single project tailored to the region's unique irrigation requirements.
MEIL is involved in the construction of two crucial pump houses and the installation of 13 high-capacity machines, with a combined power of 1010 MW, to draw water from the Godavari. Additionally, a 10.25- kilometer- long approach canal will be created to facilitate the efficient flow of water from the river.
The primary objective of this project is to draw water from the Godavari River upstream of the existing Dummugudem Anicut. The project is designed to lift around 260 Cumecs (9,000 Cusecs) of water from the river, which will then flow through gravity canals to irrigate the region effectively.
In addition to expanding the irrigation potential, the project includes plans to improve the capacities of various reservoirs and tanks like Rollapadu Tank, Bayyaram Reservoir, and the creation of a new balancing tank at Jaganadhapuram.
One of the standout features of the project was the use of large pipes with a diameter of 2.65 meters, a testament to its magnitude. The water, once lifted and distributed, served both irrigation and drinking water purposes, addressing the needs of the region completely.
The project was designed with great care to avoid disruption to the Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary and its eco-sensitive zone, preserving the delicate balance of nature.
The completion of SRLIP will not only provide a lifeline to agriculture but also support domestic and industrial growth in the region.
Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) is a major infrastructure company headquartered in Hyderabad, India. The company was established in 1989 as a small fabrication unit. In due course of time, the unit made a name for itself. We are fired by the zeal to equip the country with an engineering and infrastructure foundation that can hold up its pillars for generations to come.
