One challenging aspect to the Downward Facing Dog Pose is in creating an unbroken diagonal line of energy from the hips, down the length of the spine, through the shoulders, neck, head, arms, and hands. Lapses in awareness commonly spoil the integrity of the this line especially at the shoulders which tend to give way towards the ground too easily. There is also a tendency to fail to understand how create the proper balance between the forward tilt of the pelvis and the counter actions that serve to balance it. Thus there is a need to cultivate an intelligent, well formed spinal position in relationship to the shoulders and the hips. To do this it is helpful to direct your awareness to the more subtle internal locations along the glorious middle axis, and it may take time for you to understand the full extent of what this means, but with practice all will be revealed!
