Záznam prezentace The People's History Museum v Manchesteru na online workshopu Muzea dělnictva a práce: Prezentace emancipace a rozvoj demokracie? Workshop se konal v pátek 10. listopadu 2021. Pořádaly ho Masarykova demokratická akademie, Zastoupení Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung v ČR a Národní muzeum.
Dnešní muzejní expozice vyprávějící příběhy dělnic a dělníků se vyvíjely v průmyslových centrech s masou manuálně pracujících od 50. let 20. století a měly za cíl povzbuzovat společné třídní vědomí, pýchu na dělnický původ, respekt k práci a podporovat politickou emancipaci. V současnosti se původní západní muzea práce či dělnictva transformují na centra veřejných diskusí, snah řešení sociální problémů a podpory myšlenek rovnosti a demokracie. V zemích bývalého východního bloku se kolekce zkompromitovaných expozic rozpadají či se v lepším případě rozptylují do různých sbírek. Workshop se zabýval kontextem soudobého muzejnictví, otázkou budování moderní expozice vycházející z emancipačních snah pracujícího obyvatelstva a zachycující sociální emancipaci různých marginalizovaných a znevýhodněných skupin, která je palčivým problémem nejen v České republice.

Record of the presentation of The People's History Museum in Manchester at the online workshop Museums of Workers and Labor: Presentation of Emancipation and the Development of Democracy? The workshop took place on Friday, November 10, 2021. It was organized by the Masaryk Democratic Academy, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (CZ) and the National Museum (CZ).
The current museum expositions, which tell the workers’ stories, have been developing in industrial centres with masses of manual workers since the 1950s. The aim was to encourage shared class consciousness, pride of their working-class origins, respect to work and to enhance the political emancipation of manual workers. In the West, the original labour history museums are currently transforming into public discussion centres, tackling with social problems and promoting equality and democracy. In the ex-Soviet Bloc countries, the collections of discredited expositions are falling apart, or at best, they scatter in other types of collections. Their potential, showing the workers’ claims, strikes and protests, is largely wasted. Our workshop dealt with the issue of building a modern exposition based on the emancipation efforts of working population and capturing social emancipation of various marginalized/disadvantaged groups, which is a pressing issue in, but not only, the contemporary Czech Republic.
