The cracking new 2022 Audi RS 3 has been revealed in all its glory, wrapped in an aggressive new body kit that’s inspired by the Audi RS3 LMS race car.
It features a black single-frame grille flanked by LED headlights with RS-specific chequered-flag daytime-running light signatures above large lower air intakes, and broader wheel-arches housing 19-inch wheels and optional semi-slick tyres.
Inside, Audi’s flagship compact performance model once again brings a bespoke cabin with racy RS front bucket seats, an RS steering wheel, aluminium pedals and a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster with RS-specific displays.
But the biggest treat is under the bonnet, where an upgraded version of Audi Sport’s trademark turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine delivers a broader spread of power and 20Nm more torque via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a brand-new all-wheel drive system.
Audi’s famous five-pot now develops 294kW and 500Nm and the all-wheel drive system now incorporates a new RS Torque Splitter rear differential capable of sending 100 per cent of rear-axle torque to either wheel, enabling it to drive like the new Volkswagen Golf R.
Zero to 100km/h acceleration is now 3.8 seconds – three tenths better than the model it replaces and one-tenth quicker than the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S, and top speed is 250km/h as standard, 280km/h with optional six-piston Brembo front brakes and 290km/h with optional carbon-ceramic brake rotors.
Another option will be racy semi-slick Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres, but seven drive modes and three steering modes are now on offer, and the standard suspension makes the RS3 10mm lower than the S3 and 25mm lower than the A3.
The new Audi A3 hatch and sedan will finally arrive Down Under in late 2021, followed in early 2022 by the hot new RS3 versions, which will likely be pricier than before at around $90,000.
