조원동 구속영장 기각…법원 "구속사유•필요성 인정 어려워"
The Seoul Central District Court has rejected an arrest warrant for a former presidential aide accused of pressuring local conglomerate CJ Group to fire its vice chairwoman.
Prosecutors requested the formal arrest of ex-senior presidential secretary for economic affairs Cho Won-dong for attempted coercion.
However, the court said that after analysing the evidence put forward by the prosecution and the suspect's testimony, it was hard to recognize the reason and need for his arrest.
Cho is suspected of forcing former CJ Group Vice Chairwoman Lee Mi-kyung to resign back in late 2013, due to the entertainment company airing TV shows that were viewed by conservatives as critical of President Park Geun-hye.
Cho had said he was acting on the will of the president.
Investigators plan to decide whether to seek a warrant for him again after an additional probe.
