I arrived in Bali ready for a new adventure following my time in the Philippines, with much anticipation for the exploring the real Indonesia.
However, I feared that the mass tourism on the island would make it more challenging to uncover the true religion and traditions during my limited time here.
Alas, I headed straight for Pasar Badung - one of Bali's biggest local markets - with the hope of finding some local Balinese people, and one man in particular...
A man by the name of Pak Sirkus, AKA the Magic Man - a renowned Balinese healer in Canggu, Balj.
Regarded as something of a legend by many, I didn't know whether Mr Sirkus would prove to be a tale of mythology, or if indeed he really could cure any and all ailments as many claim.
Having asked the locals in Badung Market where I might find him, I managed to get an address, surprisingly in the touristic area of Canggu, from where the healer operates from his home.
Proving to be a popular man, I waited many hours to be seen, along with the many other people (both Indonesians and westerners alike) who he treated on a voluntary basis.
Chain smoking aside, Pak proved his understanding of health and the workings of the human body as he treated multiple conditions before my very eyes.
Then, with the light fading, it was my turn... and the Magic Man proceeded to employ some very unusual techniques to treat my woes - including bizarre UV lights, and a no-holds-barred (at times painful) massage.
Definitely one of the most bizarre encounters I've had, though I left having immersed myself in the local spirituality with a new found appreciation for Balinese customs.

P.S. Given my former professional background as an investment manager, personal finance is something that I strongly believe in.
I'll be working on a side project in the coming months to help educate people around how investments work, sharing some of the tips and tricks that I used in the City before I embarked on my adventures.
In the meantime, you can see which stocks I'm invested in, and how well (or badly) I'm doing, via the link below:

Although I've been a client of eToro for a number of years, and would remain so regardless of any affiliate terms, I do have an agreement with them which pays me a fee if you happen to open an account via the link (it costs you nothing extra and is very welcome towards my travels for a something that I'm using anyway).
Whether or not you have any interest in this stuff is up to you - and I wont ever promote it directly in my content. But if you do want to learn more, then you can see what I'm doing in real-time there, and it might perhaps inspire you to take control of your financial future.
(As its the serious world of finance, I'm also required to share this riveting disclaimer: eToro is a multi-asset investment platform. The value of your investments may go up or down. Your capital is at risk. Other fees apply.)
