Tahoe SUP is proud to support Stand Up for Great Lakes, a non-profit organization, created to raise awareness and funds to protect the beauty of the Great Lakes. They are made up of a group of stand up paddlers who plan to cross all the Great Lakes on paddle boards, while sponsoring beach cleanups and events and donating proceeds to local like the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
About Standup for Great Lakes next crossing:
Our next mission consists of a 90-mile paddle across the second largest Great Lake, Lake Huron.
This year, we were contacted by Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, headquartered in Alpena, Michigan, to paddle across the sanctuary to the shores of Canada.
Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS) encompasses 4,300 square miles of northwestern Lake Huron and is part of a national system of marine protected areas. The only sanctuary in the Great Lakes, TBNMS works to protect one of America’s best-preserved and nationally-significant collections of shipwrecks.
Lake Huron’s cold, fresh water preserves many of these shipwrecks intact and in water depths ranging from a few inches to over 200 feet, making the sanctuary a popular tourist destination for divers, snorkelers and paddlers.
Through research, education, and community involvement, the sanctuary works to protect our nation’s historic shipwrecks for future generations.
