Metabolomics is a well-established tool in systems biology, especially in the top-down approach. Metabolomics experiments often results in discovery studies that provide intriguing biological hypotheses but rarely offer mechanistic explanation of such findings. In this light, the interpretation of metabolomics data can be boosted by deploying systems biology approaches. Systems biology-enhanced analysis of data can provide insights into the molecular mechanisms that originated the observed metabolic profiles, enhancing the impact of metabolomics studies. In this webinar we provide an overview of system biology approaches, such as network analysis, metabolic modelling, and to discuss how these methods have been successfully deployed in metabolomics studies. Some methods are available via the PhenoMeNal e-infrastructure, such as fluxomics analysis via the Iso2Flux tool.
