DISCLAIMER: to answer popular questions i get in the comments every now and then - i’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to a truly functional ashtray. i realized after i made this video that the type of clay & the varnish i use do not make them useful for putting out a cigarette due to safety (fire hazard) and aesthetic reasons (the black spot you might encounter ruining the look of your beautiful tray). since then i’ve labeled my trays as decorative pieces only. the varnish i do use, however, is called “polyurethane” and it is heat resistant but still doesn’t protect our trays like we’d want it to.

i’ve been wanting to try out epoxy resin but i’m not sure if that’d be any different than polyurethane. i also believe that real ceramic clay dried in a kiln and painted with glaze is safe to use and burn therefore being the best option for a functional tray. i only assume this since i’ve seen smoking pipes used with ceramic clay material. i haven’t done any research but definitely plan to. if any of you figure anything else out let me know in the comments below :)

idk why i thought my voiceover was more chaotic than it actually was but in the moment of recording, it felt messy. watching it over now, its not really lol. either way, this is my sculpting and panting process!!! i filmed this in december 2021 so i've been looking forward to finally getting this video done :) this was the first ashtray design i ever created so its pretty special in regards to my artistic journey and career.
