Kenya Anti-Tax Hike Protests LIVE: Kenya Increases Security Nationwide As Protesters Shot Dead
In Kenya, anti-tax protests have taken a violent turn. Police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse demonstrators in the capital Nairobi and other cities on Tuesday as thousands took to the streets across the country to protest against proposed tax hikes. Protesters have also called for President William Ruto's resignation. People chanted "Ruto must go" and crowds sang in Swahili: "All can be possible without Ruto". Thousands of Kenyans have been protesting against the finance bill, which aims to raise an additional $2.7 billion in taxes as part of an effort to lighten the heavy debt load. The government has already made some concessions, promising in amendments to the bill to scrap proposed new taxes on bread, cooking oil, car ownership and financial transactions. However, that has not been enough to satisfy protesters, who want the entire bill scrapped.
