Opposition leader Anthony Albanese says corruption of the political process “has no place in the Australian Labor Party” after Victorian MP Adem Somyurek was stood down after damaging recordings were revealed.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews sacked Mr Somyurek with plans to remove him from the party after 60 Minutes published a series of explosive secret recordings which have plunged Labor into damage control.
Mr Andrews says he gave Mr Somyurek no opportunity to resign and sacked him immediately after the damaging secret recordings were exposed.
“What we saw last night on 60 Minutes was someone seeking power as an in itself, a corruption of the political process,” Mr Albanese said.
“There is no place in the Australian Labor Party.
“I had a discussion with the Premier Daniel Andrews last night and again this morning, where I agreed with his position of intending to seek and remove former Minister Somyurek.
“And that he would write to the national secretary of the Labor party to seek Adem Somyurek’s expulsion from the party, with my support.
“The National Executive Committee will be meeting at 12:30pm today, convened by the national secretary and the national president.
“We will be meeting to take immediate action against Adem Somyurek, and from that point in time he will not be a member of the Australian Labor Party.”
