Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be checking out and showing you how we hooked up the Hopkins 7-Way Trailer Connector End. This style of wiring is a great solution to, you know, not only repair kind of what you already have, but also to help you set up everything new if you're kind of going through your whole trailer. In our case today, we kind of had a mixture of that. So the trailer came in and the lights we're doing weird stuff, the brakes on it we're doing weird stuff and come to find out the existing one already had a repair in it and it wasn't the greatest. And then taking a look at the end of it too, where it connects, it's all chewed up and rusted out and all right, instead of just, you know, changing this end out or anything like that, we got our new wiring.
That way we can just have it all new, set up a new junction box and whatnot and have the confidence knowing all of our lights and brakes and everything else should work. With that said though, sometimes, we actually just did one a week or two ago, sometimes the trailer wiring will be in great shape and the end here will be unplugged or come disconnected and the end gets damaged. If that's a case and your wiring's all good, you can actually pick up just these ends here to replace and get you going again so if that's something that happened to you, that's probably a better option than dealing with having to replace the whole wiring itself. As far as the quality of construction goes on this, I don't have any complaints. We've done quite a few of 'em and the coating over all the wires inside is nice and thick.
I do like how it's somewhat malleable. It isn't rock solid there so you can kind of put bends in it if you need to or things like that. And I do like the end of it. It's more of a, it's almost like a hard rubber as opposed to plastic, so you know, this should hold up a little bit better, especially if your trailer sits outside. Some of that plastic will end up getting real brittle, kind of falling apart, breaking, and I feel like this has better ceiling properties too.
Could moisture and stuff get in there I'm sure it could, but I feel like this will be a little bit better job of preventing it. So not really a whole lot to this. We saw all this all kind of hooked up to our trailer. I do have an extra one of these on hand though, so why don't we grab that, check it out, and we can see what the other end looks like. This particular end is going to be eight foot in length.
We carry some that are longer, some that are shorter. I usually find myself going to the six and eight footers like this one and it just depends on what you plan on doing. I usually try to kind of gauge how long we actually need this and then get an extra couple foot 'cause sometimes plans change. Sometimes how you wanna route this changes and you'd rather have more than enough length than kind of fall short. At least that's my opinion, right And if it ends up being too long, not a huge deal. You can always cut this down a little bit and get it to fit how you want. As far as the color of the wires, what they're gonna control from our pigtail end what these are set up for. The blue one, that's gonna be your electric brake output. The white one will be your ground. Black one will be 12 volt power. Your red wire is left turn and brake. The brown wire is right turn and brake. And then the yellow wire will be your reverse light circuit. And then the green wire is gonna be your taillight circuit. Now keep in mind, on the trailer side, sometimes it'll go color for color and we'll have it wired up that way. Other times the coloring on the wires on the trailer will be different, so you go to hook this up, just 'cause the trailer wire's blue and has brakes doesn't mean it goes to this particular one, if that makes sense. Like I said, sometimes the trailer brake wires will be red, so you have to kind of decipher through that. It just depends who's been in there before and if it's been rewired and everything else, so just keep that in mind, but with that said, we'll go ahead get started on ours getting this hooked up and we'll kind of show you what we had to work with. To get this installed, first thing you wanna do is judge the length that you're gonna need. So where we're gonna be hooking it up is right here. I have a junction box. A lot of people's will be set up that way. Other people will just connect this right to the existing wires if you don't have a j
