Self-directed learning provides students with the opportunity to teach themselves the most essential skill to become lifelong learners: knowledge of how to learn. How can we encourage those skills in our learners? Through:

* modelling self-directed learning practices
* providing opportunities for the application of thinking skills, research skills, self-
management skills, social skills and communication skills
* encouraging independence, control, collaboration and ownership over their learning
