NANAIMO - The Nanaimo Port Authority is hoping to put the harbour city on the map as a destination stop for American Cruise Ships.
The new Port Authority terminal that opened in 2011 saw four cruise ships come through Nanaimo last year. This season five ships are scheduled to drop anchor in Nanaimo and in 2013 the Port Authority is planning to bring nine ships into town.
Bernie Dumas, President of the Nanaimo Port Authority, says that he hopes to create a niche market in the cruise ship industry by promoting Nanaimo's first nation culture and art work.
The first ship arrives in Nanaimo on May 5th and is expected to inject close to $200 000 dollars into the local economy.
