We are thrilled to have rescheduled our session with evolutionary virologist Stephen Goldstein, joining us from the University of Utah. Together we explore an important forthcoming co-authored review of the scientific literature on the Origins of SARS-CoV-2 (Cell, 2021), written together with some 20 other renowned virologists, epidemiologists and evolutionary biologists. This work traces the debates over disease emergence, and examines the evolutionary similarities and parallels with other earlier endemic viruses, while likewise underscoring the complexities in identifying "the exact pathway of virus emergence" in the 2020 pandemic outbreak. In their forthcoming paper, the team reviews the scientific literature, traces genomic structure and documented evolutionary history of the virus, and revisits key points of assumption and circumstantial evidence in common emergence narratives.
