Automation Hardware @ Netflix: Building a platform to control streaming devices
Netflix customers enjoy our content on thousands of device platforms. In order to ensure a great experience on any device, each platform must pass hundreds of certification tests. To scale this process, we created a hardware platform to automate the control of devices, their network, and the streaming applications running on them. This hardware is being used both internally and at partner sites with over 200 distributed to date. This brings with it a number of challenges familiar to the distributed hardware and IoT world including security, remote updates, monitoring, and support. We are still in the early stages of solving these challenges but we would like to share with you what we’ve built, how we’ve opened it up to engineers across the organization and how it’s being used today.
Brad is a Senior Software Engineer on the Automation of Things team at Netflix. He has spent the majority of his career working in web and UI development across various industries from marketing to automotive infotainment. Most recently he has discovered a passion for the IoT world and device automation.
