STORYLINE:
Thousands of Catholic Filipinos rose early on Tuesday for the first in a series of dawn masses held for nine days until Christmas Day.
It was still dark as one outdoor ceremony in Manila, known locally as Simbang Gabi meaning dawn masses, took place.
The square in front of the church was decorated with star lights for the mass and next to the altar was a nativity scene.
The local priest, Monsignor Albert Venus, said the meaning behind it was penitential as the worshippers had to get up early.
He also said that it helped focus the mind on the main spirit of Christmas.
