Bottom bracket noise (creaks, clunking, clicking coming from the bottom bracket while cycling) may indicate a serious problem. Often you will FEEL the "cluck" as you pedal and before you you may actually hear the noise on your road bike or mountain bike. Here's how to trouble shoot it.
1. Check that the main fixing bolt for the bottom bracket is tightened to the proper torque.
2. Check that the stack bolts that attach the chain ring are not loose but are tight using an Allen key.
3. Grabbing each crank arm of the bicycle, pull back and forth for any clicking or noise and feel if there is movement. Any noise noted here may require you remove and re-grease, repair or replace the bearing of the bottom bracket.
It's always a good idea to check the bottom bracket of the bike during routine maintenance and adjust as needed before problems occur.
