My first UTMB event in the 100km mountain race which was both beautiful and brutal covering a vast variation of terrain, some very technical rocky climbs around most of the major mountains in Snowdonia, Wales covering a whopping 6770m+ of elevation gain.
We lucked in with the weather and had very clear views all day, it was almost too hot at times, but dipping my cap in the water along the way kept me cool. On the other hand I could not imagine doing this event in the wind and rain!
It was amazing to of shared this journey with my friend Yanick who travelled all the way from Montreal, Canada to do this race with me and with a fall early on in the run causing a few minor injuries, it was incredible to see him make it to the finish line. There's not many 51 year olds I know who would have what it takes to complete such a challenge.
Like the mountains there were so many ups and downs in emotion over the 29hrs it took to complete this race, we met some great runners from all over the world along the way. I remember sitting at the top of Snowdon at 3am with a guy from Ireland trying to make sense of it all. We turned our head torches off for a few minutes and took in the awesome view of the stars and the trail of head torches making their way up the mountain, which looked like fire flies floating in the sky.
As always thanks to my number one supporters Gemma and Sophia for coming to cheer us on at the aid stations, helps so much mentally knowing you're there waiting for us.
It'll be an experience I'll never forget.
