In the last couple of weeks we've started working on (light) sparring with our Kidz Krav groups. Of course, they're just in the learning stages (so cut them slack :-) ) and they're quite young but they're having a blast! (Btw, we're purposely using boxing gloves that are quite big. We'll move on to smaller gloves later.)
Why do we teach (light) sparring to our Krav Kidz?
Sparring is the opportunity to apply techniques and strategies in spontaneous situations. It develops mobility, aim, distancing and control, and also builds endurance. We teach it to build courage and spirit in our students and to provide opportunities for them to study how they react under pressure.
It also teaches them:
Timing -- being able to accurately know when a basic defense or move should or can be performed to avoid being struck, or striking the target when it becomes open.
Range -- proper gauging of distance
Reflexes -- the ability to move your body in reaction to a move from an opponent without having to "think" about it.
Maneuverability -- using the correct stances and footwork to move around quickly, smoothly and efficiently.
Control - the ability to strike a target with the appropriate amount of power and speed as to cause or not cause damage.
Most of all: they love doing it and it makes them feel strong and proud!
