Baton-wielding police attacked thousands of university students rallying against President Slobodan Milosevic in Belgrade on Tuesday.
The clashes came as Milosevic's allies in the Serbian parliament agreed to discuss opposition demands for early general elections.
Dozens of armed police confronted demonstrators, who tried to march to the Serbian parliament building.
At least 10 protesters were beaten, while others fled the scene.
More than 2-thousand students braved cold winds and a drizzle to rally against Milosevic and his autocratic regime in Belgrade, capital of both Yugoslavia and Serbia, its dominant republic.
The crowd chanted: "Resist Until Victory!"
Meanwhile the decision, by the overwhelmingly pro-Milosevic government to discuss early parliamentary and presidential elections came as a surprise.
The regime has claimed there is no need for an early vote, as there is no crisis in the country.
But the discussion offer provided no guarantee that new elections would actually be agreed on.
A walkout of the largest opposition party from the legislature diminished chances of such agreement.
The legislature is also due to discuss a proposed law on local self-rule.
It could be used to divert authority from governments in towns and cities controlled by the opposition and transfer it to state officials.
