The Ternate language or Ternatese is a language from North Maluku, Indonesia. Despite being surrounded by Austronesian languages, it is a part of the West Papuan language family.
Originating from an island of the same name, Ternate language is a regional lingua franca of many islands in North Maluku and which, along with neighboring Tidore, were the languages of the rival medieval Ternate and Tidore sultanates, famous for their role in the spice trade.
Despite being a part of the West Papuan language family, Ternate Island itself is not located within any of the Indonesian provinces located in Papua or the island of New Guinea.
