This stone is fascinating for several reasons, the highlights for me being:
💎 It has been cut to exactly 555.55 carats with 55 facets – no easy feat when considering its composition. Unlike white or other coloured diamonds that are cut from single crystals with one axis of crystal symmetry, carbonado Fancy Black diamonds are polycrystalline (so composed of numerous tiny crystals).
This makes them super tough and therefore EXTREMELY difficult to cut, let alone finished to such exact specifications as The Enigma.
💎 It’s literally out of this world – while other diamonds form in kimberlite way beneath the earth’s surface and emerge in volcanic eruptions, carbonados are found in alluvial, sedimentary deposits, a short distance from, or even on, the earth’s surface.
Today carbonados are exclusively found in Brazil or the Central African Republic, which were once connected for more than a billion years as part of the super-continent Rodinia. This, coupled with the chemical composition of carbonados, suggest extra terrestrial origins – that they were either created from meteoric impacts producing natural chemical vapour disposition, or from diamond-bearing asteroids when they collided with the earth.
