[0:03] -- Hi guys, this is Mark- The Pond Adviser and today’s topic is herons.
[0:07] -- This is a plastic heron. And what you should do is you should move the heron about because basically the local herons will realise that this is just plastic and it’s statue if it stays stationary all the time. So you must move it around the pond so the local herons think “Oh, there’s a heron down there. They are very territorial.
[0:26] -- In the spring the plastic herons can actually decoy herons down here on to the pond because basically they’re looking for mates. And they’ll come along and they’ll squawk and if this guy doesn’t respond, they’ll come down and say “What’s the matter?”
[0:40] -- On a pond of this sort of size with this clarity of water herons are gonna be a really major problem. On a small pond where it’s very shallow and you can see the fish all times then there are major issues. I actually had one yesterday attack my garden pond which is only two feet deep and I’ve got a picture of it flying away and basically it a case of.
[1:06] -- I hate having ponds in fruit cages. I would most prefer to grow fruit in a fruit cage. But I don’t like herons stealing my fish. So the best thing to do is to put in a fish cave or a fish tunnel and then the fish can actually learn to hide in the tunnel or in the cave and get away from these guys- not this one because this is plastic. Basically top tip is to move your plastic herons around and make sure you look after them. If they deteriorate in the sunlight they don’t look like a heron anymore. And who knows the herons might work it out.
[1:47] -- Thanks for watching. My name is Mark, The Pond Adviser, and I’ll see you in the next video.
