Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951) was one of the most prominent artist of India & Creator of the "Indian society of oriental Art".
He was the first major supporter of swadeshi values in art. His sole aim for establishing the school was to counter the English influence on Indian Artist.
In 1890, when he was almost 20 year old, Tagore enrolled at the Calcutta school of Art. While at the renowned school, he was taught especially by two European artist who were employed there as teacher.
Tagore's first significant published works were a member of magazine illustrations which were published in early 1890s. Already as a writer , he also drew the illustrations for the stories he had written. He expanded his artistic range to include watercolor painting in the late 1890s, having taken a particular interest in that from while undergoing tution from the government school of Art. However, despite this Western influenced teaching, Tagore was also becoming increasingly interested in Mughal art , using a style based on this to depict the life of krishna.
He considered inspiration to be more important than taught expertise, emotion more important than form.
