Philadelphia's Magic Gardens after it’s first years of development as excentric outsider art is now a much-loved local resource run as a non-profit organization, folk art environment, and a gallery space on South Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Currently it’s an enormous work created by mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar. The so-called Magic Gardens spans around three city lots and includes indoor galleries and a large outdoor labyrinth. Zagars fabulous mosaics are made up of an astonishing array of materials, everything from kitchen tiles to bike wheels, Latin-American art to China plates. At the time this video was made, this space is open for public view, from 11:00-6:00 Wednesday through Monday and closed on Tuesdays.
The artist, Isaiah, and his wife Julia moved to South Street, Philadelphia, in 1968, when the area was being slated for demolition by the city in order to create the Crosstown Expressway (I-695). That proposal would have linked I-76 and I-95 and predictably, due to planed construction, the area was desolate and dangerous and thus ripe for creative class pioneer use. The Zagars were one of the first people to come to this area and use the lower-cost real estate then available. They opened the Eyes Gallery on 402 South Street, which was the first property that Isaiah would mosaic.
