Here's my advice for HSC visual arts essays
• Understanding essays in the Visual Arts exams
○ It's in Section II after you finish your short answers
○ You'll be picking one question from six options
○ The six questions are split in to three sections
○ Practice
○ Conceptual frame work
○ And frames
○ When it comes to preparing for the art exam, each of these three sections needs a different essay plan
○ Know the types of questions in each section and play to your strengths
• Once you've picked which types of questions you prefer, you can start preparing content
○ Pick artists and artworks which support your ideas best
○ I recommend two or three artist with about two paragraphs on each
○ Usually, one paragraph should focus on one artwork
○ You can pick artist who are similar, or you can pick artists who contrast each other
• Structuring the essay (use this in conjunction with the video on how to write an essay scaffold [ Ссылка ])
○ The introduction
○ You need an adaptable thesis statement specific to each section
○ For help composing question specific thesis statements, checkout my video which teaches you how to make sure you're answering the question [ Ссылка ]
○ Introduce your artists (location, birth and death years) and your key points
○ End your introduction with a sentence that addresses the question and brings your artists togethers
○ Body
○ Many different structures can work, depending on the question, your ideas and the artists
○ In my essay on the conceptual framework, I had
§ A paragraph on context
§ Then two paragraphs on my first artist
§ And then two paragraphs on my second artist
○ I had a different structure for my essay on frames
§ I did a paragraph on my first artist
§ A paragraph on my second artist
§ A paragraph on my second third
§ Then another paragraph on my first artist
§ Finishing with a second paragraph on my second artist
○ Start paragraphs in the same way as an English essay, with a sub-thesis
§ Introduce your artwork, with the date, and then introduce your idea and connect it to the question
§ You will see that descriptions of the art are needed to provide context, and they should be written in such a way they help you prove your point
§ Key quotes can be used to help you enhance your essay
§ At the end of the paragraph, you need to link back to your idea and the question - just like other subjects
○ Conclusion is just like other subjects
