Paul Dix (InfluxData) delivers his talk "The Open Source Database Business Model is Under Siege" on Day 2 of the Percona Live Open Source Database Conference 2017, April 26th, at Santa Clara, CA.
The traditional open source infrastructure business model relied on the backing company providing either support and professional services or closed source tools to provide additional functionality like production tooling, enhanced security and monitoring. For a time this model was good and it worked. However, since the larger cloud vendors like AWS, Azure, and Google have started offering database as a service, those models are falling apart for any company based on building open source infrastructure. In this talk I'll explore what models we've seen before, what might work in the future and talk about the first principals about why developers want their database software and infrastructure to be open source.
