The Igbo Landing, also known as the "Igbo Slave Rebellion" or the "Igbo Mass Suicide," occurred in 1803 on St. Simons Island, Georgia. A group of enslaved Igbo people, who had been captured in West Africa and sold to European slavers, were brought to the United States on a ship. Upon arrival, realizing their fate as slaves, they chose death over enslavement. The Igbo, led by their chief, rebelled by overpowering their captors and deliberately drowning themselves in the waters of Dunbar Creek rather than submit to slavery. This act of resistance has become a symbol of the defiance against enslavement and is remembered in African American folklore and history.
