The Toraja community, located in Southern Sulawesi, Indonesia, follows a unique tradition, where they preserve the bodies of their dead, keeping them at home for years. While they are still residing at the family abode, the dead partake in the full family experience, including being offered meals and spoken to by their relatives in hopes of a response.

The Toraja believe that the soul of the dead remains in the house, offering protection. The importance laid on the dead is highlighted by the exorbitantly expensive funerals, often costing 5 times the average salary in Indonesia!
