Dr. Paul Meerts is a distinguished researchers and trainers in the field of diplomatic negotiations, the author of "Diplomatic Negotiation: Essence and Evolution" (Clingendael: 2015). He lives in The Netherlands and worked at the Clingendael Institute in The Hague. Now Prof. Meerts teaches at various diplomatic academies and universities, including the College of Europe. He is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Processes of International Negotiation (PIN) Program and the founder of the Program on International Negotiation Training (POINT).
In this video, Paul Meerts and Alisher Faizullaev discuss the specifics of diplomatic negotiations, in particular the place of words, emotion, context and power. In the context of negotiations, Dr. Meerts touched upon the Russian-Ukrainian war, the crisis in the Middle East, the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and other international problems. According to Prof. Meerts, in diplomatic negotiations, the context determines the process. As he pointed out, to be effective, diplomatic negotiations should also be protected by international institutions.
