Steven Pressfield is a former Marine and graduate of Duke University. He became an overnight success as a writer after 30 years of abject failure. Identifying the omnipresence of “Resistance,” the interior force of self-sabotage he described in The War of Art, has saved his own artistic life and has helped many others struggling to find their creative calling. Steven’s novels of the ancient world, including the nonfiction The Warrior Ethos, are required reading at West Point, Annapolis, and in the Marine Corps. He lives in Los Angeles.
In this episode, Steven and I go all the way back to his upbringing and discuss who he was in high school and how that lead him down the career path he took, from marketing, truck driver, cab driving, fruit picking, to ultimately having his breakout novel become a worldwide success, The Legend Of Bagger Vance.
We talk about (R)esistance, and how it's something we all deal with, whether we identify as an artist or creator. He explains how so many people fall victim to shadow careers, which is a major them of his book, Turning Pro.
And we also discuss addiction, and how for so many highly creative people, they find the (R)esistance appearing in their lives as destructive addictions.
Really hope you enjoy this conversation! It was an absolute pleasure to speak with Steven.
