This school includes many different practices, such as Jūjustsu, Kenjutsu, Jōjutsu, Naginatajutsu and Iaijutsu. It was founded by Araki Mataemon at the beginning of the 17th century. The name “Shingan”, meaning roughly the "mind’s eye", a Zen concept that refers to the ability to read an opponent's intentions via an inner sense. It was originally called only Shingan-ryū, but it was renamed Yagyū Shingan-ryū due to the influence of Yagyū Munenori, a famous swordmaster of the beginning of the 17th century who used to be the Shogun’s own instructor. Yagyū Shingan-ryū is an art of the battlefield, enabling a practitioner to use a wide range of weapons, in addition to grappling techniques, to be used both with and without an armor.
This demonstration is performed by what is called the Edo line of the Yagyu Shingan Ryu, which is named “Taijutsu”. It is characterised by a more refined style, with a greater importance of Jujutsu and grappling techniques, more adapted to the “Pax Tokugawa” that was enforced during the Edo period thanks to the Tokugawa Shogunate.
