When it comes to integrating any technologies around an ERP, there are several options with substantial overlap in their focus. Generally, each of these technologies has their own strengths and weaknesses, and they each have a role to play. The companies that understand IT a little bit might use them for the right use cases, while the smaller companies are only going to be worried about the dollars. The classic use case for misusing the integration technologies would be to keep the integration code inside the ERP. While it might help in saving additional license fees with iPaaS, it might be harder to isolate the integration logic from the core.
The other misunderstanding around the integration technologies would be integrating with sales channels. There are several options out there, you could integrate using EDI and punchouts, or you could create a B2B commerce experience. Also, there are going to be other questions, such as should the sales channel go to eCommerce or should they go to ERP? Each of these use cases might be relevant depending on the need and architecture. For example, the APIs are generally good for internal communication where the security credential needs to be exchanged, and SOX compliance needs to be followed. The EDI, on the other hand, is useful for B2B external communication where standardization of messages is important. The punchouts could be relevant when you are trying to streamline vendor workflows or your customers are trying to do and mandating that all of their customers need to go through the punchouts.
The B2B commerce is relevant when the vendors might not be EDI-compliant or might not have the infrastructure to afford digital communication methods, but they can be persuaded to login to the web front and submit their orders and updates. The other layer related to integration could be whether you want to integrate at the web layer, service layer, or at database layer. The database layer is generally good for the fast retrieval of bulk data, the service layer is useful when communication needs to go through the business rules and security architecture, and web integration might be useful for quick notification or messaging between two web apps where the message guarantee is not as big an issue. So which are the top 10 ERP integration technologies in 2023?
