In episode one of Across the Arctic Wild, my brother Ted @TheRealTedBaird and I embark on an adventure of a lifetime, beginning our journey in the rugged town of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. With the final touches of preparation behind us, we load our gear onto a floatplane, anticipation coursing through us as we lift off into the vast northern skies. The flight takes us deep into the heart of the central Arctic barren lands, with a quick stop to refuel at a remote fuel cache. After four hours in the air, the landscape below transforms into a stark, treeless expanse as we land at the extreme headwaters of the Hood River, far above the Tree Line.
As the plane disappears into the distance, Ted and I stand alone in this wild, remote place, with hundreds of kilometers of untamed river, lakes, and portage trails ahead before we reach the sea. Our first task in this untouched wilderness is to assemble Ted's folding canoe, a crucial step in the journey that will carry us through this rugged, unforgiving terrain. With the weight of the adventure ahead of us and the excitement of the unknown, we get to work, setting the stage for the incredible journey to come.
