Elon Musk recently caused an uproar after expressing his support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The US tech billionaire posted on his social media platform X that "only the AfD can save Germany." He further solidified his stance by publishing an opinion piece in a German Sunday newspaper.
In response, the Scholz administration appeared to downplay Musk's comments during a recent press conference, stating, “Freedom of opinion also covers the greatest nonsense.” This was the initial reaction from Germany to Musk's endorsement.
Germany is preparing for an early election on February 23, following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party governing coalition last month, which unraveled amid disagreements on how to revitalize the country’s stagnant economy.
The German government has expressed concern regarding Musk's comments on X, yet it will continue to use the platform for the time being. Musk justified his remarks by stating that his investment in Germany gives him the right to comment on the country's situation.
