The 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) report paints an alarming picture of school-level literacy in South Africa, with no significant progress since the last report in 2011, and South Africa coming in last place out of the 50 countries participating in the study. University of Pretoria (UP) researchers completed the South African leg of this global study into reading and literacy in grade 4 students.
